Greco 1541 – 1614

Beautiful, inspiring, thought provoking and moving. The El Greco exhibition at the Grand Palais surpassed my already high expectations.

The paintings on display transported me into another world this afternoon. The mystical quality of the works. The complexity of the personalities in the portraits. The other worldly light in the eyes of his subjects. The colours.

The exhibition was beautiful, it was powerful. It put El Greco in the context of his time. A renaissance artist born in Greece, schooled in Venice and Rome, influenced by his eastern roots, Titian and Veronese in Venice and Michelangelo in Rome. Settling in Spain he developed his strikingly original style.

The exhibition is on until February 10th in Paris. It moves to Chicago in March and is on until June. See it if you can.
